Nihilistic and Sony have confirmed that the first-person shooter game, set in the Resistance universe, is set to hit stores on the 30th of May.
Sony are looking to get things right with the launch of their follow up to the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation Vita, after the second generation handheld portable gaming device did not get off to the best of starts in Japan.
The console sold just over 300,000-units in its first week and sales figures dropped week after week as the Vita dropped below the PlayStation 3 and PSP within 4 weeks of release.
A lack of launch day software and games were one of the reasons and while many thought this would signal alarm bells at Sony the consumer electronics giant stated it was not ‘concerned’ with the figures.
At the same time though, Sony have announced a number of bundles for the Vita’s release in the United States and other regions in order to ensure that interest levels in the console remain high. However, launch day titles aside, the company needs to convince
gamers that the Vita will be receiving a steady flow of content in the coming months as well.
It seems as if Sony was thinking along the same lines and has announced that the Vita’s first first-person shooter, Resistance: Burning Skies will be hitting shelves in May, or May 30 to be exact.
Sony promoted the game as the, “first ever dual-analogue FPS game.” This not only raises the attention the game will receive but also adds extra pressure on the game’s developer, Nihilistic, who have to prove that the Vita is a platform that can deliver
an enjoyable and engaging first-person shooter experience.
The cover and box art for the game were also revealed which showed, “a freshly slain Hybrid lying on the streets of New York City with the protagonist’s fire axe resting in the rubble.”
Burning Skies is set to take place on the first day of the Chimeran invasion of the United States, which players earlier witnessed through the eyes of Nathan Hale in Resistance 2.
One will have to wait until the end of May though to find out whether or not the game will be a success.
