  1. It might be because Windows XP cannot recognize the driver for your video card. The solution is to find the require driver for PC. It is usually provided along with the PC when you buy it. If you have the CD, install the driver and it will solve the problem. If you don't have the CD, search on Internet-"driver for (the name of the video card/motherboard)"

  2. What your operating system is missing is the drivers that run your video chip or card.  You need to find out if your have one or the other.  There are horizontal slots in the lower half of the back of your case.  If your monitor is hooked up to a plug-in that sits in one of those slots, you have a video card.  If the monitor's wire is hooked up to a plug-in that's surrounded by others (higher up than in the slot area), you have a video chip that's integrated onto your motherboard.

If it's a video card:  crack open your case.  Unscrew the screws on the back and remove the left side of your case (or the entire 'skin' of your case might be just one piece of metal).  Take a flashlight and look at the card the monitor's wire is hooked into.  There should be a sticker that has upc codes.  On that sticker will say the model of the video card.  Write down the video card's model name and model number (ex. Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB).  Type in the model name into google and go to the video card's website.  Drivers should be there under "support" or "drivers".

If it's a video chip:  You need to find out the motherboard/systemboard/mainboard's (different names for the same item) model name and number.  To do that, go download CPU-Z.  It's an identification program that will tell you many useful things about your computer's hardware.  Run CPU-Z and write down the mainboard's model name and model number.  Google the manufacturer's website, go to it and search for the model number.  They will have a link for drivers.  Download the latest chipset, sound, and video chip drivers.  Run each driver separately and reboot your system after each one (in other words: chipset driver, reboot, sound, reboot, video, reboot).

That ought to get your video back up.
