I'm considering a position teaching algebra at a community college but my education did not include education courses. Do you know of any good books, websites, or other resources that give suggestions on teaching methods, lesson plan development, testing, and grading? I've came across the book "How to Teach Mathematics"....is this a good resource?

  1. You really don't need any education courses to teach college.  I teach middle school math and algebra at a community college.  In college you will have adults and they cannot be treated like children.  Just teach them the skills for the day, make sure they know how to do it, and then end class.  It is very easy.  I was scared at first b/c I never worked with adults.

  2. Adult Education is a specialty all its own.  Ask at the college itself... there may be someone on staff already who can help you with this ... knowing how to teach adults is just as important as knowing the Math and how to teach it specifically.  Surely the college you are considering already has a existing program and some resources... and other staff who can help you learn how to teach adults.

There are may Adult Education diploma programs for college instructors (all such instructors need this certification to teach where I am ... the west coast of Canada) and there are all sorts of resources on how the teach adults specifically, and also resources specifically for that age and level of student.

Start with the NCTM and with your college educators unions/associations... I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.
