Can anyone explain this quote? If respect commands itself...wouldn't it always be given when it is due?

  1. respect should be a natural response of politeness which can not be demanded.


  2. true respect is an involuntary response to true greatness...one cannot make the choice to give it or withhold it arbitrarily.
