Respiratory Illness forces Caroline Wozniacki out of Rome – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, witnessed another downturn in her professional tennis career on Tuesday. She was up against the Spanish performer, Anabel Medina Garrigues, in the second round match of the Internazionali
BNL d'Italia when she pulled out of the contest in the latter part of the second set due to respiratory illness.
She lost the first set 6-4 and during the break called her medics to have some consultation. After a small discussion, she decided to carry on with the contest but she couldn’t play her natural game and her shot making was limited
by the breathing issue. At the scores of 0-4 in the second set, she took some time out and again talked to her physio who advised her to call it a day in Rome. It was another heartbreaking departure for the Dane who has seen a lot of issues this year having
enjoyed the majority of 2011 at the number one spot.
From the number one spot in the world rankings, the Dane has witnessed a major slump since the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open. She drowned continuously in the ranking and her game play also looked a bit
shaky especially after the return of two big guns to the tennis circuit, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams.
Wozniacki is now ranked number eight in the world and if the Chinese number one, Li Na, manages to reach the semi-final stage of the clay court tournament in Rome then the Dane number one will sink one place further to number nine.
It has been a very tough season so far for the 21-year-old Dane who was stunning throughout the last year. She has fired a couple of coaches in the process and reverted back to her father as her permanent coach.
A lot of things have been happening in her life. Some rumours were also heard about her clash with his boyfriend, Rory McIlroy, who is the number one golfer in the world. So, things have shaped in such a fashion that have made
life difficult for the Dane recently and her dismal performance coupled with chronic injuries are not helping her cause at all.
If she fails to recover in a couple of weeks, she might be doubtful for her participation in the Roland Garros French Open and her dreams of claiming her first maiden Grand Slam title will be flushed down the gutter that will definitely
be a painful scene for her.
