Response of media personnel to Caroline Wozniacki’s impersonation – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, is under the cosh after impersonating her fellow star, Serena Williams, during an exhibition contest in Sao Paolo, Brazil. She was competing against the second ranked Russian blonde,
Maria Sharapova; during a friendly match when, out of nowhere, the 22-year-old Dane decided to pad up her shorts and top to impersonate the curves of the 31-year-old American who happens to be from the black community.
Soon after the viral infusion of the video of impersonation on the social networking sites and other forums, there were comments degrading the act of the 10th ranked Dane. The prank backfired and Wozniacki was called
racist for her act. However, she refused any of the claims and stated, “It was all in good fun as Serena is one of her closest friends on tour.”
Some of the comments from the media personnel are as follows:
The co-host of the TV show, The View, Sherri Shepherd said, “I know they are friends, but still, inside it does something to me, because we’ve been made fun of for so long for different parts of our bodies. And to see Serena Williams
reduced to this, I don’t like it.”
Another woman, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who is a famous host of TV Shows, belongs to the community of Williams. She took the act of Wozniacki as nothing but a fulfilled drama stating, “I think this is inside stuff that they always
do.”
Hazzar Deuce stated on the Black Voices Twitter page, “This is an old racist trope about our supposed hyper sexuality and sexual abnormality.”
A poll was conducted by the readers on Huffington Post’s Black Voices section. The results stated that 40 percent of the respondents considered the act of Wozniacki as racist while 38 percent declined that claim and the rest were
unsure about their feelings.
The 15-time Grand Slam Champion, Williams, has declined to comment anything about the act. Nonetheless, it appeared to be a major hit amongst the crowd at Brazil; even the 17-time Grand Slam Champion, Roger Federer, was seen smiling
at the stands and Sharapova also took it as a funny incident.
