Responsibility of ensuring a controversy-free IPL lies with franchises, insists Gambhir – Cricket News Update
The Victorious Kolkata Knight Riders' skipper, on Friday urged the franchises to be more proactive to ensure their players maintain discipline both on and off the field.
The recently concluded season five of the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) was marred by a number of off-field controversies, including the molestation charges laid against Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Australian recruit Luke
Pomersbach by a US woman and the alleged involvement of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/WD-Parnell-c2787 in a rave party.
Gambhir said that franchises should take strict action against the players involved in these shameful incidents as the controversies earned the esteemed tournament a bad name.
"Somewhere down the line, franchises need to control these things," said the KKR skipper while talking to a news channel on Friday.
"A certain player from a certain team does these things, the franchise needs to be fined and it has to be fined heavily," insisted Gambhir.
BCCI’s integrity was also questioned by the pundits of the game, especially by those who have always been against the cash rich league. But Gambhir said that it is the responsibility of franchises and not the board to ensure that
players follow the code of conduct and maintain discipline.
"It is the responsibility of the franchise to control its players. The BCCI can't appoint one person each to keep a watch over every player," said Gambhir, adding that the players with a history of binge drinking should be banned
by their respective franchises from going to public places during the tournament.
Besides the off field controversies, the tournament also faced allegations of spot fixing and black money. Five local players were suspended by the BCCI immediately after a Hindi news channel played a video footage in which the players
were admitting of having accepted corrupt payments for fixing.
However, Gambhir once again defended the BCCI marinating that the franchises should make sure their players are not involved in any such activity.
"We keep blaming the BCCI and the IPL for all these things," said the left-hander. "A lot of these things can be sorted out if the franchise is strong enough. Whatever we sign for is given, and nothing is given under the table," he
added further.
