  1. Mainly you have to love and enjoy working with the handicapped. You have to give them the respect that you would want from them. It takes a strong heart and a special person to do the type of work. Go to your local school and talk to a special ed teacher or check with your states Dept. of Education on the laws and what type of training you would need.  Good Luck.

  2. If you're interested in becoming a SpEd teacher, also consider speaking to a Special Services Director from your local school district.  Some of them are very helpful in informing aspiring teachers about what SpEd involves.

  3. write IEPs, test student's academic skills, keep data sheets on progress, hold IEP meetings, case manage for student, obtain outside resources for things like hearing aids, glasses, plan with general ed teachers for mainstream opportunitites and modification of work, schedule meetings with O.T, P.T and SLP professionals, provide plans for assistants as well as yourself, research new techniques and methods, attend meetings and inservices both in and out of school, continue career development by getting a higher degree, locate and rewrite materials, take behavior management and the latest "take-down" training and deal with angry parent, teachers and students.

    Gotta love it!
