Question:

Restaining Kitchen Cabinets?

I have the 'standard' honey oak kitchen cabinets (house built in 2001). Based on the construction of commonly installed cabinets, is it possible to restain/refinish this type of cabinet, or do I have to replace/reface to achieve a color change?

What I would really like to do is simply stain to a somewhat darker brown color, but still retain the woodgrain, etc., that currently exists. If the cabinets are wood veneer, can this be done?

  1. Your current cabinets will probably have a finishing layer on it.  Before you start to re-stain, you need to have it sanded off.  You can always try it in an inconspicuous area before you start.
