Restaining furniture?

I have a TV stand and coffee table that is already stained, not sure what colour...like an orangey colour. If I want to stain it chocolate, how much do I have to sand back the furniture before applying the darker stain?

Try an inconspicuous spot first and just remove the top sheen.  If you dont get your desired results, you will have to sand down to bare wood.

I just stained a piece of bare furniture and I used an all in one stain.  It was the stain and sealer in one.  Worked pretty good!  I was impressed.
