Restaurant advice?

i work at a restaurant in vancouver , just got hired and i kinda need some help.

those visa/debit machines theres a different way to use each of them apparently and i get taught and stuff its just hard to remember it lol. So theres a way to use the debit and a way to use a visa/credit .

help?

I've worked in restaurants for about 5 years. Debit cards run as credit cards. Most restaurants don't even give an option to run it as an ATM and it automically does through as a credit after you swipe it, but it comes right out of their checking account.

Run all cards as credit cards. You can run a debit card as a credit card too. You won't have the time to ask a patron to enter pin codes.

I was a restaurant manager. First off there is different machines as you just stated. The major difference is the Pre Auth stage. Pre Auth is where you check to see if the customer has enough room on their credit card but do not take off anything. It gives lines for a customer to add a tip to the piece of paper. This is important if tips are part of how you pay your bills or if you have to tip out based on your total sales. Then after the pre auth stage you have to finalize the transaction. This actually takes money off of the credit card. If you do not do this stage it will not be long before the company is firing you. It is better to ask for a demonstration again then get it wrong. Take notes for each part.

It has been about five years for me but I know that the pre auth stage still exists as I get those pieces of paper when I use my credit card at a restaurant.

From the machines we had you enter in the total purchase if it is debit or no tip. Then you okay the amount for the printer to print off a copy for credit. Debit it will send the information to the pin pad for the customer to complete. You have seen this many of times from the other side. There is no closing process if you do not do a pre auth or are using debit.
