Restaurant etiquette?

This may be a really stupid question, but I need to know. Say you and two other friends go out to a restaurant together and are all going to pay separately. How exactly does that work?

  1. Tell your server separate checks. And don't forget to tip:)

  2. You either split the check 3 ways, or you ask for separate checks.  That should be decided upon before you order so your server can prepare the ticket properly from the beginning if the checks will be separate.

  3. you can either ask for seperate bills or split it up equally and include the tip (15% is proper etiquette)

  4. You also have to decide on the amount of tip and split that three ways.  Some are heavy tippers, like me and some are not.

Not all restuarants will grant seperate checks without a fee.

  5. Before we order we inform the server of separate checks. We all pay our own tips.

  6. As a waitress, it is much easier to split checks if we're told of this beforehand.  As a customer, I would much prefer to have separate checks rather than just splitting the bill three ways because maybe you are drinking soda and your friends are drinking liquor -- you'll end up paying a third of the bill and paying a lot more.  Otherwise, if all three have cash, you could divy up the bill at the end based on what each of you had and just get the one check.

    Hope this helps!

  7. When you first sit down and the server starts your order, ask for separate checks. PLEASE.

I work as a waitress and we still do things the old fashioned way, writting everything down, to totalling the bill.

I'll be at the register and people will ask then! It just is time consuming. Sometimes I will ask, if I think it may be. But it's hard because you never know the situation of the customers.

And if it is one check, the first person to ask for it, gets it. I've almost had my arm broke from people fighting over paying the check!!

But whatever you do, ask the server for separate checks as soon as you start to order! Have fun!!
