Restaurant in NYC similar to the Sugar Bar?

It's a friends 18th birthday and I'm looking for a classy place such as the Sugar Bar (http://www.sugarbarnyc.com/), to take a group of people to. The food has to be American, Soul, African or around that criteria. No sea food or Italian and also affordable. PLEASE HELP!!! Need to find a place quick!!! Thanks in advance.

Most Soul Food restaurants in New York are more homey than Sugar Bar but there is B. Smith's in the theatre district.  The food isn't traditional soul food, but it is very heavily influenced by it and the atmosphere is very nice. For some reason they don't post their menu on their website, but it is posted at the menupages link that follows the restaurant link below.

For African I would recommend Massawa on 121st street, but don't go if you're ravenously hungry.  The service can be slow, but the food is worth the wait. Their website is a bit low tech, but don't let that deter you.
