Question:

Restaurant overcharged my debit card! Please read!?

I went to this pizza place 4 days ago and the check was for $20.99. I left a $6 tip in cash on the table, therefore on the tip line for the debit card receipt, I put "cash" on the line - and left the total as $20.99 to be charged to my debit card. I was checking my statements tonight and found that they charged me $26.99! I do not have my receipt that I was supposed to keep - can I still go to the restaurant and dispute this?

Do restaurants keep the signed receipts from customers for a certain amount of time so they could just look up my receipt?

  1. All restaurants are set up to "pre-authorize" an additional percentage toward gratuity when you use a debit card. This is to ensure the cardholder has enough finds in the bank account when adding a tip, whether you leave one or not. It's usually between 20% and 30% depending on the restaurant. If you use your credit card this won't happen. The pre-auth will fall off in a day or so depending if the charge was done over the weekend. I have been managing restaurants for over 10 years and have worked in them for over 15. If I had a dime for every call I recieved from an angry customer that was overcharged, I'd be rich. Just hang in there.

  2. If you would have kept the receipt t would be easy. They may have already submitted all their receipts to the main office. I would still call and explain the situation. My question is how did they know you left a $6 tip

  3. Call the restaurant or go there and explain what happened.  Hopefully they'll look at your originaly receipt which they do keep and rectify it.  If they are not helpful, you can call your credit card company and dispute the $6...if its worth it for you.

  4. I own a restaurant  (in Canada, laws may be different where you are)

I am required to keep my cash register receipts for 7 years!

I am required to keep my debit receipts for 6 months.

If you return to the restaurant ( i recommend 1:30/2pm, not during meal times) and calmly explain to the manager the problem they can fix it.

You can help your case by knowing what date you ate on, what time you dined, and approximately what time you payed.

The "manager" would be the best person to talk to.

If they do not resolve the problem, contact your bank IN PERSON not over the phone.

Banks do not look lightly on debit fraud, however deal with the restaurant first. If you are extra nice and polite you might get a free meal out of it.

  5. Yes, the restaurant shoudl have kept the receipt.  But, for $6 bucks it might be more of a headache then it is worth.

  6. i myself would take it up with the bank.  the bank can always cancel the "tip" part of the transaction.  i really wouldnt go through the trouble for 6 bucks but i do understand that its the point that they actually made that mistake. def call your bank

  7. Usually when servers are closing the bill the system ask to to input your tip if its left on the card. The server might have added the 6 dollars accidentally, subconsciously  . i know my fellow servers have done this...usually the manager will catch it before they cash out. If they don't the restaurant keeps all records and their willing to keep you happy. Just give them a call...im sure they will be more than happy to help you.

  8. You should pray twice a day for the next three days, then go to the restaurant on the fourth day. You troubles will be resolved!

  9. Bring a statement from your bank and go to the restaurant anyways. Even if the $6 isn't that big of a deal, I think it adds up after a while, and the probability is that the restaurant would give you some sort of a coupon for your troubles.

Go to the restaurant, ask for the manager, and explain the situation patiently. The worst thing that they could do is not refund your $6, so why not?
