Question:

Restaurant service?

I go to this restaurant that I usually love and we got a different waiter for the first time. He was late, and was very impatient about everything. I went with a group of friends and we all thought he was pretty bad. the restaurant is really nice, four or five star, but the service was so bad. He brought the wrong food twice and he rushed us quite a bit. Also, I think he tried hitting on my friend right in front of her boyfriend. Neverless, we gave him a lousy tip because he deserved it. the next time we went back, we got him again. And he was if not 10 times worse. And then we talked to the manager, but he didn't help very much. The guy just explained that the waiter was under stress (since the guy was young and went to some sort of community college) and we gave him a bad tip again. When we left, i think he was telling all the staff how much of a lousy customer we were and i would have sworn they are all glaring at us. I am pretty afraid to go back. Should I not have given a bad tip

  1. I worked for 20 years in restaurants and I tell you. You should never tip well for bad service. Servers make their living off tips so if you tip them well when they do a bad job they have no reason to change what they are doing. If people don't tip them well they won't be making enough money. Then they have to do one of two thing either change their attitude and become a better server or they quit and find a different job.

  2. Crappy service, no tip and I tell the server and the mngr. why. I have waited on thousands of people and expect to be treated decently.

  3. Tips are based upon service, therefore you did the right thing.  Psychologically speaking, you should never reward poor behavior, or it will surely be repeated.

  4. Here's the thing: if you're going to be eating at the same place over and over again, you have to tip decently because the wait staff WILL remember you and if they think you're a bad tipper, you'll automatically get crappier service, since they're thinking "why should I kill myself for them, they're going to tip me crappy anyways".   I'd also fear them doing something to my food.  On the other hand, I too will give a crappy tip if the service sucked, but I won't go back to that restaurant either.  I would stay out of there for awhile ( a month or two at least), then go back  and if you get the same guy, request a different waiter.  Be extra pleasant to the new waiter and give them an really good tip.  If you find a waiter you really like, don't be afraid to ask to be seated in their section or to be served by them.  I do that at my favorite restaurant and now the waiter knows me by name and give me phenomenal service every time.

  5. As a waitress, I remember my customers two ways: The GREAT tippers, and the BAD tippers. Usual tippers I don't remember. Although that was no excuse for your server to be as you described. He deserved that bad tip, and I would have done the same thing to let him know. BUT, the case here is, you should have gave him a great tip. Reason why? Giving a great tip the first time, regardless of the service, most likely ensures excellent service next time around, because if we have 5 tables, and one table we know tips great, we will put that table at our first priority. I've been doing this for years, and unfourtunately, that's just the truth and how it goes. SO, my advice, if you get him next time, explain to him that you usually tip well, but you were very upset about your experience. If you don't feel comfortable telling him personally, tip him 30% on your next visit, and I'm pretty sure he will remember you, and possibly think he did something different that made you like him. It all about first impressions, if you don't like the way a guy/girl looks, you most likely won't be attraced to them. So if you aren't tipped well by your customers, you most likely won't take care of them next time around the way you should. It's just the way the business goes.. good luck, and if worse comes to worse, request a different server -- you ARE allowed to do that!

  6. DONT MESS WITH THE STAFF< CUZ THEY"LL MESS WITH YOUR FOOD!!!! TRUST ME.......<ever seen "waiting".......trust me, it's what i do for a living, people can be gross. and in my experiance, guys waiters can me much grosser than girls. we hesitate before putting a buttered roll down our pants....but that doesnt mean it doesnt happen>     My suggestion......get another resturant!
