Question:

Restaurants and stores won't call back after I apply for jobs?

I'm 16, and a junior in high school. One of my sophomore friends last year had a job, and a lot of my junior friends had jobs. But whatever places I apply to, nobody ever calls me back. Even if I apply online. What do you suggest? I've applied to Vons grocery store, a hamburger restaurant, Albertson's, Round Table Pizza, and more that I can't remember. I really need a job to raise money for this program I want to do.

  1. Take this from a recruiter who sees tons of applications everyday, you need to make yourself known by the company you're applying to.

When you go to apply for a position make sure you are dressed appropriately and are by yourself. You never know who is handing you the application, and you need to always make the best first impression possible. Fill out your application neatly and make sure every area is filled out.

Call the company the day after you apply to inquire about your application.  Most places have several people fill out applications each day which means your application could get lost in the shuffle resulting in you not getting a call back.  If you call the company regarding your application it shows the hiring manager that you are serious about the position, and will also guarantee that your application will have been  looked at by the manager and not end up in the trash.

Good luck with the job hunt!

  2. your best bet is to wait a few days after filling out the application then..

CALL THEM it shows that you are interested.

let them know that you filled out an application and was wondering if the position is still available

    if not..

    dont stress it out

just move on.      just fill out more applications and do the SAME THING and you will get a job!

  3. make sure you dont have any call tones on your phone

  4. Be aggressive, call them if you dont hear from them in a few days.  My husband basically started his career this way.  He was working a $9.00 an hour job that he hated, had applied at a factory for work earlier and never got a response.  He had the worst day ever once, then went straight over to the office where he applied and asked about his application.  The office sent him to the foreman, the foreman said I actually need a maintenence tech, let me look for your application.  He found it, handed him a cup and paper told him to report to the local hospital for a drug test and be at work by 7am the next day for training, and his wage would start at $12, then go up to $18 an hour after the probation period of 60 days.

Since then he has had the opportunity for tuition riembursement, went to school, now he is working for Campbell's Soup Company making about 70k a year.  We feel blessed he has a good job, and it would have never happened if he hadnt taken the initiative to go into that office that day and ask.  I feel even better during this economy, when people are poor....they eat more soup :)  No layoffs.

  5. Welcome to the real world!!  Try speculative applications as well!!

  6. First of all, I think your reasoning is backwards when you say "Even if I apply online." The less effort you make, the less of an impression you will make. Get out of the door and apply in person (not that you haven't been, but that's your best chance).

When you are applying, dress neatly.

Ask to speak to the manager so you can hand the application to him or her in person. Make good conversation to show you are friendly, earnest, polite and eager.

Repeat as necessary. Getting a job is a game of playing the percentages. And, good luck!!!
