Question:

Restaurants in Fortitude Valley?

I'd like to take my girlfriend somewhere inexpensive (I'm a little broke) in Fortitude Valley. I know beggars can't be choosers, but somewhere with a nice atmosphere would be great! Thanks.

  1. You know, she's going to appreciate it even more if you cook dinner for her, eat dinner by candlelight at home, with some romantic music.

  2. I'm going to be honest with you, things in this area are expensive as you may/may not already know.

It's hard to find reasonable 'restaurants' at the Valley. Meals start at $20 and go up rapidly from there.

I'd recommend you go for more of a hotel/pub/bar.They are always cheaper, still have a basic great menu and usually the atmosphere is better than the boring posh restaurants.

They have a lovely menu. Something for everyone, but then if your looking at a steak - they start at over $20 as well.

They have a more cheaper menu. Much more 'classy' than the menu above. Few dishes under $20.

They have an extremely reasonable menu. Don't think I saw anything over $20. Some very interesting meals. Different/Classy.

Perhaps ordering an entree as a main might be a better idea. Then follow with desert. Would probably work out cheaper and can't go past a good desert!

Don't forget to book, especially for a Friday or Saturday night. Reservations on weekends at the Valley are a must!

Hope some of that is helpful!

  3. My partner and I have been to Giardinetto (Brunswick Street) several times now. They are an Italian restaurant with an extensive menu (including great vegetarian meals) and very reasonably priced. You can choose from a set menu, or go a la carte. If it's just the two of you though, a la carte would be more suitable.

The atmosphere there is great. You can do "footpath dining", which is always interesting in that neck of the woods, or if you're after a more romantic evening, you can dine inside where the predominant lighting is that of candles. If you are indeed after a romantic dinner, I suggest you go mid-week, since it can be a little rowdy there on Friday and Saturday nights.

If you click on this link http://www.giardinetto.com.au/ you'll find more info, and you can print a $10 voucher towards your meal. The website doesn't look terribly attractive, but the food and atmosphere certainly make up for that!

Another good place for a meal in the Valley, is at the Powerhouse. There's a restaurant there called Watts, but they are fairly pricey. You can however eat at Bar Alto, which has a good menu, very affordable and you are able to enjoy the atmosphere of the Powerhouse, without the costs involved with Watts restaurant. The Powerhouse is also a fantastic venue if you are after good music, interesting patrons, and they are hosting some of the upcoming events for the Brisbane Festival. Some are free, so you can have a cheap meal and enjoy performing arts such as cabarets, films, forums, theatre and bands for a cheap night out!
