I'm moving to the Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe area in June. I'm moving from Chicago so I'm accustomed to great restaurants.

I need recommendations. What is your favorite tapas, Mexican, cheap eats, Indian, sushi, Chinese, hole-in-the-wall, and overall restaurant?

    Try this site!!

    Also:

First off, you will feel right at home here in AZ considering there are many Chicago style hot dog places here such as Luke's and DA Chicago dogs and Subs on Thomas and 38Th st. (Wal-Mart is in the same shopping plaza)

Best Mexican food is any of the Rubio's  Fresh Mexican Grill with 18 location in the Valley of the Sun. http://www.rubios.com

Cheap eats, any of the family owned Mexican fast food restaurants.

Chinese, In Mesa on Ellsworth and Brown there is a New York Style Chinese restaurant that is the best in the Valley in my opinion.

Sorry I can't help you with the rest, I never had those kinds before.

  2. if you look on line at kez999.com (local radio station) they have a whole area called dining destinations that has a listing of the restaurants, some even have reviews, I'm still kind of new to the area, but some of the best I have been to are:

    Mexican- Barrio's Cafe

Italian- Cafe LaBella (small neighborhood cafe)

    Sushi- Blue Wasabi

    Awesome, cheap Chinese- Chen Wok

    New Mexican- Richardson's

    Hawaiian- Aloha Kitchen

    Cajun/Creole- Papa Doux

    Steak/Chop- Donovan's (expensive)

These are just my favorites, and there are lots of places i still want to try

  3. The best authentic Mexican food is Via delos Antos on Central and Dunlap.  They have the BEST green chile I have ever tasted.  They also have the largest selection of Tequila in the country- I think over 150 varieties, so you can bet on great margaritas.  The atmosphere is great and the food is so yummy!

All the previous recommendations are for large chains who's food is just ok.  This is a true one of a kind place.  Welcome to "The Valley of the Sun" !!

  4. I tried to provide restaurants that aren't a popular chain like TGIF's, Olive Garden, Pizza Hut, etc.

Cafe Boa - small restaurant, nice atmosphere.  Nice place for a date.  I enjoy the occasional catch up dinner with one of my gf's.  Tasty entree's, decent wine selection and yummy desserts.

Mexican - Aunt Chilada's (Pointe at South Mountain) and Arriba's (New Mexico style Mexican -my personal fave), Garduno's, Dos Gringos (several Valley locations)

*Macayo's is okay, On The Border SUCKS! and Rubio's is a chain -it's alright but it's not cheap like Taco Bell

Thai - Yupha's Thai Kitchen -fantastic.  Service is excellent, food is delicious and prices are good.  You would never know this was such a great restaurant. It's in a shopping plaza and used to be a fast food Chinese restaurant.

Indian - Priya, Chars (? -it's been a very long time since we've dined there)

Italian - Riazzi's, Marcello's, Papa Razzini's  (all in Tempe, non franchise)

Pizza - Nello's (phenomonal),TC Luigi's (do you like white pizza?), California Pizza Kitchen

And I hear Oregano's is pretty good to and makes for a nice evening if out on a date.

Hot Dogs - Ted's  Hot Dogs

Chinese -PF Changs (more like fine dining) and it's sister (?) company Pei Wei (delicious and fast -try the lettuce wraps and the crab wontons) and Wongs (very authentic)

Sushi - Sushi Eye, Sushi Kee -both in Tempe

Burgers - In and Out Burger (double double animal style w/o special sauce ...tasty)

    American - Marie Callendars

Sports bar restaurant - The Vine (decent prices, good food, regular drink and meal specials and lots of tv's with various sporting events on at all times)

Breakfast - Coco's (10 times better than Village Inn and 100 times better than Denny's)

One thing about the Valley, you could live here several years and not eat at the same place twice.

  5. Mexican - Macyo's, On the boarder, there are lots of hole in the wall mexican food places to..

For a nice dinner try Saute's its a great place, kinda pricey but worth it..

Welcome to the HOT state.. best of luck...
