Question:

Resto recommendations from locals?

My restaurant question in the Dining Out section hasn't been addressed, so I thought I would try here instead...

I'll be in Montreal for 5 days in May and need some local input. What's your favorite French restaurant in the city (not too expensive)? I'm considering going to Le Convivial, L'Express, Le Grand Comptoir, Copains Gourmands and others. Any good or bad things to say about any of them? What about the Spanish and Portuguese restaurants? Is Casa Tapas better than Tapeo Bar a Tapas? Marilou or Adega or another choice? I would consider any of your favorites. Please tell me why you like them too. Thanks!

  1. Yeah, I've heard of L'Express before now - my best friend's ex-boyfriend used to work there as a waiter.

Maybe he still does - who knows?

Have you tried Le Caveau Restaurant yet?

I also recommend a very nice French restaurant called Au Petit Extra - ever heard of it?

Spanish or Portuguese restaurants? Can't help you there I'm afraid but I went to this Mexican restaurant with a friend in downtown Montreal once and it was absolutely delicious!

Man I wish I could remember its name, d**n it!

Maybe one day I'll remember it!

In the meantime, enjoy the following links!

P.S. Before I forget - if you have an incurable sweet tooth like mine, you should definitely make a worthwhile detour on Saint-Denis Street, Avenue du Parc and Laurier Street also; you will find quite a few mouthwatering French Patisseries there, I can assure you! Enjoy yourself in Montreal!

  2. I don't believe I have gone to any of the ones you mentioned, but I rarely eat spanish tapas, and prefer a few other French restaurants.

    For French, I would consider:

    - Alexandre

    - Chez Queux

    - Steak-Frites St. Paul

    For Portugese:

    - Rotisserie Portugalia (Order for pickup only! Service is terrible and there is a long wait but the food is great, especially the chicken)

If you mentioned what part of town you will be staying in, I could offer more suggestions. Some of the best restaurants are the Greek, Italian, and Lebanese/Middle Eastern. You can almost not go wrong at any of those.

  3. guido angeline,

    steak frites

  4. L'Express is a very good choice, it's actually one of my favorite restaurants, the food is exquisite.

As of a french restaurant there's also au Pied de Cochon, which is VERY popular and the food is amazing, but you will absolutely have to make a reservation a few days in advance. Another great restaurant that is a little less fancy/expensive is Frite Alors!, some french cuisine mostly. There's a really good restaurant for breakfast which is called Beauty's, good food, good people and the smoothies are just amazing. As of the Spanish and Portuguese restaurants i haven't tried much of them. Another restaurant i recommend is La Patisserie de Cascogne, it's more of a bakery but it has sandwiches and salads for lunch and some very good deserts, coffees, cappucino's, etc.

I'm sure you could find some reviews on those Spanish and Portuguese restaurants on the internet.

    Bon Appetit!
