  1. Restraining orders are usually obtained at the office of the court clerk, located in your local courthouse. All restraining orders will have a no-contact provision, prohibiting personal visits, calls, letters, emails, texts, etc. Depending on the situation, other information can be added, as determined by the judge.

The expiration of the order is determined by the judge, depending on the type of order. Some are permanent, some may only last a couple of years. Some require you to surrender firearms.

All states give full faith and credit on a restraining order from any other state. They are entered into a national database, and will come up when a drivers record is searched.

  2. In MD you can go to the commissioners office for after hours help. Or during the week during normal business hours you can go to your local courthouse and apply for one. If that doesnt help call your police dept or sheriffs office for more info on how to obtain a peace order or exparte. They will ask you to document the reason for the order giving dates of abuse..etc. Ususally a temporary order will be issued first they are good for about a week. You will have to go to court to get a final order they are good for 1 year.
