Sixteen best-of-19 matches were played in the final qualifying round of the world championships. It was a well-fought round in which most of things went as per expectations.
Six-time world champion Steve Davis lost to Stephen Lee by a frame score of 10-2. This is the first time since 1978 that the Ginger Magician will not appear in the world championship. The 54-year-old Davis couldn’t capitalise on any given chance from his
opponent and was punished badly. He left Sheffield right after the match without commenting on the match.
Another former world champion, Ken Doherty, has also lost his battle against Jimmy Robertson by a frame score of 10-6 and will not be playing at the home of snooker this year. Doherty had an upper hand all the way in the first session and was leading by
a frame-score of 6-3. But the tables were turned on him in the evening session. Robertson dominated all six frames in a row sending the Irish back home.
Fully stretched battles were seen between Dave Harold vs. Gerard Greene and Matthew Stevens vs. Fergal O’Brien in which Harold and Stevens emerged successful.
Chinese star Liu Chang who started from the first round and beat the likes of David Grey, Jimmy White, and Tom Ford also crashed in the final round against Welshman Ryan Day by a frame score of 10-7.
Similarly the hopes of David Gilbert and Liu Song, who also started from the first round, have been ended by Judd Trump and Joe Perry, who have won them by a frame score of 10-6 and 10-4 respectively.
Andrew Pagett, however, has made an accomplishment performance. After beating the likes of Zhang Anda, Bjorn Haneveer, Nigel Bond, and Andrew Higginson, he has made it to the most prestigious event of snooker.
