Question:

Resume Cover Letter?

Been in the one job for past ten years and unsure of who to address cover letters too when applying for a job online through a recruitment company.

Is the letter addressed to the recruiter? If not how do I address it? I understand that at the start of the letter its a simple Sir/Madam if its unknown. But generally recruit companies only advertise the position and not the company who you are applying to work for so unsure what to do with the formal address box at start of cover letter ie.

First Name Last Name

Position

Company

Date

Thanks for any help.

  1. Usually they don't want the recruiter meaning the person hiring you but the actual company hiring you but if you have nothing else I would say use the recruiter and their address.  And negate the company name or just use the recruiting company name.

  2. Hi,

When I'm unsure of who to address the cover letter to, I put  "The Manager or "The HR Manager". However, if you're unsure and do not feel comfortable with not addressing to a specific person or role it might be worth while contacting the contact person on the job ad and ask them who you should address your application to. If you feel silly asking just make an excuse up ie you don't want it to get lost....

Remember this - the most stupid question is the question never asked.

That's what HR recruitment consultants and contact person are for - they are there to assist you with any questions you have regarding applying for the role.

    All the best.

  3. It should tell you in the ad who to send your resume to. Just put that at the top of the letter.

PS. You should probably post the letter on here before you send it and we'll proof it for you. "who to address cover letters too" lol
