Question:

Resume/LinkIn question: include a graduate degree that is not relevant to my current career aspirations?

I have two Masters degrees, one related to my current field of interest (publicity for nonprofit arts), an M.A. in art history; and an M.Ed. in secondary education, because at one time I thought I wanted to be a high school teacher.

Should I leave the M.Ed. out of my resume/LinkedIn profile because it is not relevant to my current goals? I was going to school while working on the M.Ed., so leaving it off does not leave any gap in employment time...

Will I risk looking overqualified (or too expensive) with two Masters degrees?

Thanks!

  1. Really you can use it or not, it wont make you look over qualified - it will make you look more educated, yes your current Masters shows that, but two shows even more dedication and hard work. But if you prefer to leave it off, since it's not relative to your current position or what your looking for that's fine too, with your situation it's really more of a personal choice.

  2. I used this resume writing service in my area, this is the email address, (resume.help50@yahoo.com) you should try them, it only cost me $35.00 and I got a great job from this new resume, I never thought about the format that they use but the turn around time was less then 24 hrs. I would have to say it was the best service I have ever used and it was worth every dime. Also they let me pay through paypal.

  3. Put your entire post-HS education in.  Since you have one degree that's on-point, it will not make you overqualified (as it is in a separate field), it shows that you are well-rounded and may exhibit skill sets and/or expertise to potential employers that they wanted but didn't advertise.

If they're hiring folks with masters' degrees, they'll start salaries wherever they start them and expect negotiations.

It's irrelevant employment experience that you can put under the heading "additional employment available upon request" or some such.

    Good luck.  I'd hire you!

  4. I would stress what is relevant to my current search.  Don't forget to use the key words and phrases; but at the very bottom of the resume I would include a something like "additional education includes an M.Ed."  You never know, they might want someone with the expertise of being able to get ideas across to a third party.

  5. I would just list those items relevant to your current field of interest on LinkedIn.
