I graduated from college a few months ago and have been running my own website for about 8 months( selling mostly electronics)... I was having so much financial success running the website that I decided to put off looking for a job right after graduation... I have found making money a little tougher in the last 8 weeks so I have decided to put my degree to work... how should I explain the self employment on my resume? Is running your own business instead of looking for a job out of college look bad? Any info would be great

  1. Absolutely not. Starting and Running your own looks great. It takes alot of guts and perseverance on your part. This should appeal to most employers showing you take initiative and are a go getter!

  2. Explain your self-employment? It sounds as if it is neither illegal nor immoral. It is real-life entrepreneurial experience! Brag about it. Well, in your resume, you may want to be more measured than that, but you promoted your "business"; promote yourself!

  3. Hi,

It's difficult to find the right one isn't it?  I have a similar problem to you so have just started looking at some college videos that are proving very useful. They have lots of info and students opinions on best, cheapest etc. If you think they could be helpful to you too you can see them for free at http://www.free-college-videos.com

    I hope that helps.

  4. ABSOLUTELY NOT is self employment in any way "bad" on a resume.

Anyone receiving your resume should understand your situation (post-college.)

With the employment-situation being so tight in most sectors, self-employment is considered a PLUS in many employment sectors.     This shows the firms where you apply that you had the "gumption" to put yourself on the line to give the self-employment-scene a try.

Many firms see your "been there / done that" business-savviness as a PLUS to their eschelon.

    GOOD LUCK in your endeavor!

  5. Running your own business especially a successful one would show a prospective employer that you have initiative, drive, independence and can set up a successful business model.  All of these work in your favor.

If you're worried that a prospective employer would question why you didn't go right into your chosen field you will just explain to them what you said here.  You were having a lot of success with the business and also wanted to take some time before launching yourself into the work force full-time.

Add to that the fact that you just completed several years of college most employers would understand why you might want to take a little time off.  A lot of graduate students take a year and go traveling before finally looking for work.

You'll be okay.  Use it on your resume.

  6. I used this resume writing service in my area, this is the email address, (resume.help50@yahoo.com) you should try them, it only cost me $35.00 and I got a great job from this new resume, I never thought about the format that they use but the turn around time was less then 24 hrs.  I would have to say it was the best service I have ever used and it was worth every dime.  Also they let me pay through paypal.
