I just bought a condo and the kitchen countertop is this abdurdly ugly fake wood formica surface. What can I do to resurface it? I was thinking about tiling, but I'm sure there are better methods. Any suggestions?

  1. replacing it is easier and more cost effective

  2. we tiled ours and it looks cool. we tired the center white and the edge black. hard work but worth it.

  3. lol...^^^^^^^^^^^... these guys cracks me up. if you tile, you s***w in a hardi-backer board that the tile adhears to... anything under makes no diference, don't waste your time removing what isn't necessary.

tile would really add to the beauty, especially with the new styles of slate. In "expensive" looking kitchens most use granite or slate with a nice border and a variance pattern to it.

But if time is a concern they sell many products that allow you to "paint" the surface. (Epoxy, Color flake or Resin)  These products can be costly but still cheaper then tile. (not alot)

there are also concrete countertops, these are VERY beautiul designs and beautiful borders can be installed making your kitchen one to be desired by all who visit.

my friends often comment boldly on mine.

if your doing all the work and merely looking for a new look, these would be a great options. the products are even used over even linoleum floors and quaranteed to last 30 years. do some research through flooring companies, most will have additional products for counter tops. at least if you decide on tile in the end you havent wasted your time.I have included a few quick basic sites so you get an idea of what i'm talking about.

    good luck.

  4. you probably have a post formed formica top.. you know its post formed if the fron edge is rounded.  First remove that. Then you can have anything you want, tile, formica, corian, granite, very few adhesives will stick to formica.  If you dont remove the old top first your just wasting your time and money.  It might last you a year.  But you will replace it.

  5. Attaching 1/4 inch hardi board to the old top is the best surface to start building on.

Just remember the new top will be higher by about 3/4 inches and you will have to have a front trim piece about 2 1/4 inches tall  ( to cover the old top and new )
