Resurgent offence wins 6-2 victory for Cincinnati Reds against Arizona Diamondbacks – MLB Update
Chris Heisey smashed two homers on Wednesday, August 29, to win a late 6-2 victory for the Cincinnati Reds against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
The game saw the Reds' hitters struggle until the sixth inning, but a resurgent offence came down aggressively from the seventh inning to gain victory for Cincinnati.
"We struck in a hurry. Had some guys hit some long balls ... and Latos pitched great," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said. "Other than that balk in the first inning, he pitched outstanding. And he hit well, too."
Arizona Diamondbacks which had a 2-0 lead up until the seventh inning could not quite hold the Reds' hitters. It was Heisey who hit the two-run homer to first tie the score, followed by Dioner Navarro’s solo homer, giving the Reds an edge in the game.
Brandon Phillips did not leave behind to do what was greatly needed as the slugger smacked a two-run homer to centre to give a safe lead to the Reds, taking the score to 5-2. "When I hit it, I was like 'Please get up, please get up,' but I didn't think it was going to be like that," Phillips said. "I did some pushups (Tuesday) night and I was like 'Maybe pushups really work.'"
Before the Diamondbacks' defence could settle and breathe, Heisey hit another solo homer, solidifying the team’s position in the game, providing the defence enough space to easily manoeuvre.
With Mat Latos pitching seven strong innings to allow only two runs, J. J. Hoover – who was recently brought back to the line-up, pitched a solid eighth inning to maintain the team’s lead. The Arizona Diamondbacks' pitchers failed to hold back the in-form Reds' hitters. Starter Patrick Corbin allowed three runs in his six innings and the reliever Matt Albers three runs in eighth innings.
Reds' Jose Arredondo came in the ninth to pitch a scoreless inning to seal the Reds 6-2 win in the game.
This was the Reds 80th win in the 132 games they have played this season, the fastest since 1976. With this win, Cincinnati swept the three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
