Resurrection of volleyball in Haiti speeds up – Volleyball news
Haiti, the country which was hit by century’s worst earthquake in 2010, is going through the rehabilitation process.
The devastating earthquake killed some 220,000 and left 1.5 million homeless according to a UN report. Every aspect of the life was immensely affected, while sports were no exception.
However, there has been great improvement in the field of volleyball as Haiti Volleyball Federation received stupendous support from International Volleyball Federation to resurrect the game. The FIVB organised a total of four ‘Volleyball Cooperation Programmes
(VCP)’ in Haiti after the earthquake. The International volleyball governing body backed up the national federation and put up huge efforts to bring the country back on track.
The president of Haiti Volleyball Federation, Margarette C. Graham, acknowledged the support of FIVB and shared his views in the following manner.
He stated, “Volleyball has helped put the country onto the road to recovery following the devastating earthquakes that hit the region in 2010.”
The International Volleyball Federation held two courses in 2011, which solely focused on the training of teachers and volleyball instructors. In the next year, the FIVB featured Haiti on top of VCP Courses Calendar.
A training course for young players was organised from February 18-22, 2012. The five-day course concentrated on helping the future crop of volleyball players in Haiti. After the successful completion of first training course, the FIVB in collaboration with
local organisers arranged a Coaches Level I Course in Haiti from February 24 to March 2. Both these training courses provided necessary support the players and coaches.
The FIVB instructor André Glaive of France, who visited Haiti in 2010 and 2011, played an instrumental role in putting a new life to the sport of volleyball.
He stated, “It's always motivating to see a federation following the project implemented successfully, but it's also comforting to see that the FIVB support finds expression in the results in the development of the national volleyball. It's important that
this support will remain strong and go further.”
The Haiti Volleyball Federation is quite optimistic that soon the youth and junior teams will take part in the qualification process for the FIVB Volleyball Youth and Junior World Championships slated 2013.
