Question:

Retainer problem?

Ok so I had braces and then I got a retainer, like a month and a half ago. My dentist told me to wear my retainer full-time for a month (which I did) , and then after the month, just wear it at night. But the problem is, when I wear it only at night, the next time I put it in, it doesn't fit right. So, to avoid the ill-fitting, I wear it usually for the whole day. Now I'm worried that since I've been wearing it during the day and at night, that my teeth will always need the retainer's help, and I'll always have to wear it during the day. WHAT SHOULD I DO ?

thanks =)

  1. dont worry,u can wear your retainer all long days for 3 mounth and then tapered wear of it down  to 14 hour and 13-12-11-.............................an... after 6 mounth your teeth are stabled.

  2. you should wear it 24 hours a day for 6 montsh to a year.  The reason it is hurting is because the teeth were moving during the day and then at night it doesn't fit right anymore and is tight.  Luckily over the night it forces them back to the right spot but doing this over and over is not good.  Continue wearing the retainer 24hours a day, this is the best thing to do and the more you wear it the less your teeth will tend to move back, they do not become dependant on the retainer, in fact the more you wear it the less dependant they become on the retainer

  3. you should wear your retainer for a year. Laster you have to shift to nights only & after that remove it.

  4. Your not damaging your teeth. You may need your retainer fit better so this kind of thing doesn't happen. Next time you go in ask tour dentist about it. He/she should know.
