When I remove my retainer to brush my teeth I find some food usually squished on top of the retainer (where it is against the roof of my mouth). Is this normal?

  1. Just brush your whole mouth (cheeks, tongue, roof of mouth, etc) and your retainer every day and you should be good to go.

  2. I have a retainer and that has never happened to me. You may want to try brushing your retainer and the roof of your mouth while burshing your teeth.

  3. i have a reatiner to and sometimes it just gets stuck up there its fine and ..normal just brush it or i usually mix water and mouthwash and soak it everynight but yeah its fine

  4. Hi,

I am assuming you are using the removable type of retainer.

This type of retainers act just like dentures in terms of the fit.

Just like a denture, there is always a gap between the appliance and the tissue in your mouth since it is a removable appliance.

Therefore, food WILL get caught underneath the appliance (i.e., the tissue surface the appliance) even if it is the most perfect retainer.

So, taking care of such retainer and a denture is basically the same.

    Do the following :

    1. You will have to take it out after every meal.

    2. Use a soft toothbrush and clean the appliance,

    3. (Ideally), brush your teeth.

    4. Rinse out to make sure the tissue is also clean.

    5. Then put the appliance back in.

In other words, do whatever you would do to maintain a denture.

  5. yes its normal, nothing to worry about it happens to me too
