Hey, I got my braces off 3 years ago, and just recently got my wisdom teeth out a few weeks ago and now my teeth are moving and I use my retainer every 2 nights. Last week I went to use it, and it wouldn't fit! and it still won't :( How can i fix this? does this mean that I will need to start orthodontic treatment again?

I've tried to heat it up so that it would fit and it didn't work. This is really annoying, my teeth are really hurting bcoz they feel tight! and to stop that kinda pain, i use the retainer and it goes away.. but now it won't fit, so i really need some help here.. I would go to the dentist but he's all booked out for the next 2 or 3 weeks.

please help

  1. Don't heat it up, it might ruin!  You need to get in to see another orthodontist as soon as you can.  If you wait too long, the retainer will not be able to be adjusted enough to fit anymore (your teeth could move too much in 2 weeks) and you might have to get another retainer.  See a ortho soon and they should just be able to adjust it.

  2. i wouldnt try and adjust your retainer you may do more damage.

Definitly book in for your dentist, perhaps mention to them what has happened and see if htey have any pointers on what you should do or perhaps they can move your appointment earlier if they think its urgent.  I doubt it would do much damage in two weeks though, and if it does they may give you a new plate with the springs in it to push it back in place.

FYI, my husband recently had one of his teeth move and he is now wearing a retainer to move it back, he only needs to wear it at night and the dentist is pretty confident it will only take about a month to move back into place, so even if your teeth did move, it shouldnt be such an ordeal like you went through with your braces in the first instance
