Retiling Bathroom?

Question

I'm trying to hire both a tile guy and a plumber to install a new plumbing fixture and retile a standard bathtub surround (3 sides). I'm not sure I understand how to schedule the plumber and the tile person. Can someone give me a sense on who should do what on what days and how long each task will take?

Putting in the new plumbing fixture (behind the walls)

Demoing the old tile, installing new wall board, retiling, etc.

Installing the new fixtures

Have I missed anything?

My mom totally gutted out her bathroom. My dad did the sheetrocks on the wall first and painted. It took about 2 or 3 days. Then he did the plumbing work ( cuz he works at his job it took another 2 or 3 days) But it could have been done in one full or one and a half days. Depending on how much work you actually have to do. The tiling should be done AFTER the plumbing is completely done. That takes 2 or 3 days tops. All together, I'd give it a week if everyone shows up, does his work and finishes on time.

The timing depends on what has to be done. Some contractors specialize in remodeling, which usually means they'll take on portions of the project others wouldn't, such as doing tile and drywall instead of just tile.  But in general:

demolition comes first (by you or general contractor)

then rough plumbing (plumber)

then new tub (plumber)

then new drywall (you or GC)

then  backerboard (tilesetter)

then tile (tilesetter)

then finished plumbing (plumber). This is the step where toilet & sinks are set, faucets are installed, and connections are made to the water supply.

Now you know what General Contractors do. They coordinate the project and do all the misc. stuff that the speciality trades won't do!

I am a tile guy and I do a ton of remodels. In fact i work with a plumber friend together on many projects.

1)Usually the plumber will come in first and remove all the existing fixtures. 2)Then I will come in and do the inital tile and walboard removal. 3)He then comes back and runs his rough plumbing. 4) I then do all of the reinstall of the wallboard, wonderboard, tile, grout etc. 5) He then comes back and installs the new fixtures.
