Question:

Retinal detachment?

I'm scared I might have retinal detachment. I think I saw one of those flashy things, photopsia, earlier today and I just saw another one. I haven't really seen many floaters but I don't pay attention. I'm so scared. Do you think it could just be from staring at the computer screen for too long I've been staring at it a lot lately. I have a bad habit of pulling out my eyelashes could that have caused it? I'm so scared.

  1. your story of flash of light ,photophobia all can appear in other conditions--your other story of wearingone month of one eye contact lense, may be the reason for your first condition--and for your imaginations of retinal detachment for excessive veiwing the computer-all not pre desposing factor--also retinal detachment leads to sudden loss of vision not all you  imagine

  2. My father just had his 4th surgery to repair his detached retina.  He first noticed it because he could only see half in his one eye.  I don't know about floaters, but I wouldn't get myself worked up over something you can't change.

do you have any reason to really believe that your retina would detach?  My father was in a car accident and the air bag is what caused his.

  3. How old are you and are you very myopic? I ask because seeing flashes of light at the edge of your vision is often a sign of posterior vitreous detachment, which is a benign event that happens to most people as they get older, but at an earlier age if you are very myopic.

Nevertheless, since flashers can be a sign of a retinal tear you should see a doctor. Most of the time it is just that the vitreous is pulling on the retina but it's important for the doctor to rule out anything serious.

No, I don't think staring at a computer screen or pulling on your eyelashes will cause flashers. Don't get too worked up because as I said, most of the time flashes are not anything serious but you should make an appt. to see an eye doctor, just in case. Think how relieved you will feel when the doctor tells you everything is fine.

  4. I wouldn't be worried just see your doctor or optician but unless your old have diabetes of had some form

of eye trauma would predict you are fine.  pulling out eyelashes wouldn't cause it nor would staring at a computer screen although could cause tired eyes which can cause visual probs.

  5. You can't get a retinal detachment from pulling out your eyelashes or over wearing you contacts (that poses a whole other bunch of serious eye health issues, do some research on neovascularization in the cornea) nor working on the computer too long.. Most people describe a detached retina as trying to see through a grey curtain. If you are scared, I would see a doctor.

It's very rare to have both retinas detach at the same time, yes, it's possible to have only have it happen in one.
