Question:

Retinal tear laser surgery???

I just came back from laser surgery for a small retinal tear. The surgery was torture, it hurt like h**l, and my doc did not prescribe any meds, just said to take tylenol and be on my way. Now, I wonder, is it normal that my eye hurts and that I still see flashes of light and a dull fuzzy light at the bottom of my field of vision? (I had my tear at the upper left of my left eye). Plus my eye feels very scratchy as though I had sand in it. Is this normal?

  1. So many questions!  First people do not usually describe pain with this type of treatment, but some people experience discomfort.  I would recommend using ibuprofen (2 or 3 over the counter tablets) for the discomfort, if you have been able to use ibuprofen in the past without upsetting your stomach.

The location of the flashing lights is exactly where you would expect to see them with a retinal tear located as you described.  Eventually these flashes should subside.

Did you have to go to the operating room for this?  If so, then you are probably experiencing a little dry eye sensation from having your eye opened during the procedure.

If your procedure was performed while you were seated upright, then your itchy eye is probably due to some left-over solution that the doctor used to cushion the special lens that was placed on your eye during the procedure.  Using some artificial tears or wetting drops for dry eyes should help you recover rather quickly.

If the itchy sensation goes away by tomorrow then you should be able to wear your contact lenses.

Hopefully you have a follow-up appointment with the doctor already scheduled.  Write down any questions that you have and present them to the doctor at the next appointment.

  2. Well, i recently was playing soccer and got hit in the right eye and tore my retina in three spots.  It hurt, terribly.  I got the laser eye surgery, and idk if the results are different because i am younger, but id remember feeling any of that.  Definetely ask your doctor. !

Vote for best if you can, because i need points - and i think this is a good answer ♥

    Does this help?

    Hope So ! ♥

  3. Do not wear your contacts tomorrow. This is a question you should ask your ophthalmologist, not someone on Yahoo answers. If you do put in your contacts while you're still healing, you run the risk of a serious infection. The same goes for wearing makeup. Don't risk it. BTW, an OD can't perform retinal surgery, so you shouldn't trust their answer. No offense. If your doctor isn't available, call around to another ophthalmology office and see if you can get an answer. They should be able to give you an answer over the phone if you tell them what you said here.
