  1. Possible alternative if you choose not to get into a retirment home is to consider a Reverse mortgage.  This type of mortgage allows the senior to convert the equity in thier home into cash which can be used for healthcare or any other purpose.  There are no monthly payments with this FHA program either which is very nice.

  2. Advantages,

    nice rooms with good beds,

three meals a day with 2 snacks daily.

    medication if necessary, given everyday

    group activities and monthly openings

usually, a good staff to look after the residents

bath or shower twice a week

they put your name in all you clothes and do your laundry

change the bedding once a week

they give you a wash up in the morning and help you get dressed, if necessary

    large screen TVs to watch

there are private rooms, one person to a room; semi-private , two to a room; and wards 4 to a room

    Disadvantages

    Not cheap to live there

sometimes they are under staffed. therefore if you ring of someone you may have to wait a long while before they get there

sometimes the company that's runs it will cut corners to save money and the quality of the food goes down

you have to pay for your own medications, which can be pretty pricey if you have a lot of them to pay for. Not too bad if you have a drug card like we do here in Ontario Canada, where they $2 per prescription

The sad thing about nursing homes is when people stick their relatives in one and don't visit them afterwards. Then they become just a waiting to die place.

My best friend Tom is in one and I try to visit him as least once everyday. He likes it there because they treat him good and do things for him he can't do anymore. They also provide him with an oxygen compressor, which he needs because of his heart condition. And he gets a lot better care then he did when he was in Belleville General Hospital. In the three months he was there he didn't get one bath or shower just sponge baths.

Hope this helps and have a nice day.
