in 199 my best friend was found shot to death and the police deemed it a suicide, although I have accepted this I was wondering because a few questions have been brought up lately if I am able to get a copy of the entire case file from the police department or is that closed to only the family?

  1. It might be closed - however, you can make a request of the police department pursuant to the Freedom of Inforamtion Law (FOIL).  The police may deny the request or grant it in part or in full.  You may end up missing documents or have some documents balcked out partly.

  2. What you probably want is the coroner's report. You can get this from the county you live in. Be warned, this is not fun reading, will be very cold and discriptive as to the cause of death. You will have to pay for the report, usually around $10.00.

  3. It won't hurt to speak to the detective that was in charge of the case. Your questions might give them something else to check on just in case.  You can also request a copy of the file since it is considered closed.

  4. Hi William, You can try by going by the department who conducted the investigation. You might even be able to just call, they can at least let you know to obtain a copy." Sorry to haer about your friend ".

  5. You can attempt to get a police report.  Head to the station and ask.  The reports in my area cost $10.

  6. if the case is closed you can ask to see the report  at your local police station.
