Question:

Retro Cartoon style?

I'm trying to find a great reference for that wonderful "50s" Retro style of cartooning...if that makes any sense? Haha I can't find the perfect example..I'm doing a bunch of character designs that I want retro-y but I can't get it right.

Can someone, who understands me, help me out??

Thanks!

  1. I found a great little webcomic not too long ago that has a real 50s feel to it. It's called Thorn.

  2. One easy way I can think of to help with that 50s look is to simulate four color printing, sort of the way Roy Lichtenstein did in his art.  It's relatively easy to pull this off if you're using a computer, not to difficult with pens, and a bit more difficult with paints.

Or are you just looking for that 30s-50s sci-fi futurism?  If so I'd suggest trying the classic  newspaper comics Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, The Phantom, and Prince Valiant.
