Question:

Retro Rinks?

After taking a hard look at the Mellon Arean and even the Joe this last post season, I came to the point that the NHL has too many cookie cutter rinks that all look the same much like baseball had in the 70's and 80's.

I hope that the Oilers and Pens do it the right way when they get their new rinks in the next few seasons and give them a bit of a retro feel, I know you need elitist suites for people that never come to games but how about giving some of the common fans some of those prime time sight lines.

  1. I do agree. Alot of the rinks look alot alike. I do enjoy looking at the Joe and the Mellon Arena because they're different looking.

The new Pittsburgh arena is suppose to look sort of like this.....

  4. I really like the Exel Center in MN. It's really spacious there's even assigned standing room!

I am originally from Detroit and love the Joe, but it is in pretty rough shape and could have easily been replaced when the lease was renewed this last year. . . There's a lot of great history in that arena, but I would like some updates.

I would love to see a brick and mortar stadium built like the old Olympia in Detroit, or Wrigley (obviously not hockey) in Chicago. . . But they are just too expensive.

  5. the Older arenas don't tend to have as good sight lines. Rinks with character tend to be rinks that aren't as good for the fans. So what you're saying is to give the rinks retro flavor, but don't include retro things like bad sight lines and no boxes?  Make up your mind- do you want retro or not? Where do you draw the line? Steel troughs in the mens room?

I guess what I'm saying is, What do you consider retro?

Besides, the arena itself does not need to be the draw. It should be kept up to date, with nice paint and concourses with good concessions. The team on the ice should be the focus and the arena should reflect that.
