Question

how long are they valid for use? For example, can I buy one, get on a train and stay away overnight, then use it to return the next morning?

if you buy a walk up fare either a saver return,business saver or standard open return, the return journey is valid one calender month from the date the ticket was bought i.e

Ticket bought 14 August, return portion valid until midnight 13 september

unless you buy an open return which both the outward and return are valid for a month.

The return portion of both saver return and business saver does allow the passenger a break in journey as long as its done before the end of the month.

standard open single and return also allow this

cheap days, one day travel cards do not allow an overnight stay but a travel card does providing its used on the same day

a normal return is only valid on the same day

It depends on the journey you're making.

For journeys of under 50 miles, the only returns that are available tend to be coming back the same day.

For journeys of 50 miles or over, or to airports, you can generally get a return that's valid for one calendar month (so if you buy one to travel out on the 18th of August, that'll be valid to return until the 17th of September).

For longer distance journeys, you can usually get "Advance" tickets. These are sold as Singles and commit you to travelling on specific trains, in exchange for which you get a discount compared to the normal return fare.
