Return of Colt McCoy, but when? – NFL Feature
An outside pressure on Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur is amounting to bring back former quarterback Colt McCoy on the starting line which the coach has resisted to an extent.
His persistence with rookie Brandon Weeden as an offence leader merited understanding given the team has tried out former offence leader many times in past, and during all those times he failed them.
A new wave of sympathy has been expressed for the player given he was let out of quarterbacks’ competition without actually having a competition. The team said he failed the competition but the player said he was never given an opportunity. So the opinion
was swayed in his favour that the former starter should have been given a chance to fight.
Further, he has been lucky that Weeden has failed the team most of the time while the team have failed themselves completely.
It is a total collapse and coach may be right in his own wisdom that there is a little chance that Colt will do any better to them this year.
Also, McCoy was given an opportunity in a preseason loss and he failed the team as much as he had been doing since his arrival in Cleveland.
Irrespective of the coach’s thinking, the fans are hopeful that Colt can come out of the gloom of this year. Their argument is probably based on the reasoning that under McCoy they had been winning four-five games in a season, at least, which appears to
be a difficult case this season. So they find it better to try the best out of two worst players, and they think McCoy stands a chance.
Shurmur is still hopeful that Weeden can stage a comeback any time in the season. His wisdom is very much near the one applied by former Jacksonville Jaguars coach Del Rio when he had to deal with situation of his QB Blaine Gabbert, and at the end ended
up losing his job.
The cases also have another similarity that both teams are sold, and Shurmur’s position is in doubt with the new owner even without the team’s current dismal run. The poor showing on the field makes his exit even more imminent, though.
He probably does not have a choice but to wait and see what happens as the team plays through the season.
