Return of the Dark Knight; Juan Martin Del Potro to play Thailand Open
After being sidelined for several months due to his wrist injury, Del Potro will apparently be back with a bang, to compete at the 2010 Thailand Open. Prior to the U.S. Open this year, the Argentinean stated that he does not expect to be able to defend his
2009 U.S. Open Men's singles title.
The professional went on to exclaim that the Thailand Open will be his first tournament since the 2010 Australian Open, that he played earlier this year. In the year 2009, as a result of an abdominal injury, ranked no. 1 in the World, Spain's Rafael Nadal withdrew
from the tournament. However, Nadal will be making an appearance at the Thailand Open this time around.
In the words of the professional himself, “This year with my health and body in good shape, I am really looking forward to playing some great tennis for the Thai fans.” Quite possibly, Nadal and Del Potro will be made to oppose
each other at the 2010 Thailand Open.
As invincible as Rafa seems at this point in time, we must not forget that it was as a matter of fact, Del Potro who defeated the Spaniard, that too, in straight sets, at the 2009 U.S. Open. The Argentine beat Nadal 6-2, 6-2 and
6-2 in the semi-finals to make a place for himself at the finals of U.S. Open played in the year 2009.
Twenty eight professionals will be featured in the main singles draw of the 2010 Thailand Open. Apart from which, four players who make it through the qualifying rounds and three wildcards that have not been announced as yet.
Apart from which, this will be the first time that the event will be open to public in the history of the tournament. Starting on the 25th of Septmber, the championship will be held at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
Additionally, the tournament executive Committee Chairman stated that they were delighted to have such a strong field of players competing for the King's Cup at the Thailand Open this year. “Thai tennis fans are in for a fantastic
nine days of tennis action,” said Suwat Lipatapanlop.
Hopefully, the tournament will prove good for Del Potro, provided that he gets off to a good start. Considering the fact that the underdog's skills might be slightly rusted up, there's a chance he won't make it too far. On the contrary however, his 2009 U.S.
Open win proves that he has limitless potential and could quite possibly end up stunning the crowd this year as well.
