Question:

Returning Through Customs - Brussels to US?

I've been trying to do some research on this question, but seem to be getting a lot of contradictory answers.

I am flying from Brussels to Philadelphia, and then catching my connecting flight to Detroit. I realize that I will go through customs in Brussels, and that I will go through customs once again in Philly.

My question is: once I land in Philly, do I go get my bags and go through customs with them, or does my checked luggage continue on to my destination, and only I and my carry-on go through customs?

Also, I think the amount of alcohol one is allowed to bring into the states is 1 liter without declaring it. How critical would they be of me if I brought in 1.4 liters? I am not 21 so I don't want to declare it. Just curious if 1.4 liters would raise flags, especially if I divide it up between my two bags.

  1. When ever you fly into the U.S. from another country, you must always clear customs with your checked bags as that is your point of entry. Your final destination may not be another international airport, so it would not have customs. If you were to take liquor it would most likely be confiscated

  2. Yes, you clear customs in the US in the first airport you arrive at. You need to pick up your bags, carry them through customs, and then drop them off for transfer to your next flight just after customs. Your checked luggage will already be tagged for your final destination.

You DO need to declare the alcohol you bring back no matter what the amount. You're allowed one liter without paying duty. However, if you're not 21, it's illegal for you to bring back alcohol.
