Question:

Returning to Canada from Hong Kong

I'll be going to Hong Kong for a month, and I just know I'll be buying things.

I have a Canadian passport, am a resident etc.

Does anyone know if there's a certain limit on how much I can buy, and bring back into Canada without having to pay the taxes/duties? (I'm not sure what exactly they're called)

For example, if I come back from the states after being there for more than 7 days, I can't bring back over 750 Cdn without having to declare? and pay the duties? Is it still 750Cdn even if I stay in HK for a month?

I've never gone over the limit, so I'm not sure what to do...If I do go over it, I just have to declare it upon re-entry, probably fill out some forms and pay the duties on the amount I have over 750?

What happens if I still have either CDN or Hong Kong money/cash in my wallet? Do those count towards the 750 as well?

I appreciate any advice, or any links that I can read! Thanks! =)

  1. hi Crystal. Just buy all you want. It doesn't really matter. Just as long as you don't have the same item but in bulk that's worth more than $10,000. If you aren't going to plan another trip to hong kong then you should try to use all of your currency at the airport. Buy snacks for the plan once you pass security.

  2. Shopping is pretty cheap so your gonna have to buy alot of c**p to go over any limit, ive gone Hong Kong to Vancouver with loads of c**p and never a problem, as long as you dont have too many of anything  so they would think your gonna sell it then your fine. Most thing you wouldnt even declare. Your gonna buy a bunch of clothes? They were already yours you brought them! A new phone or I pod? take them out of the box, you cant use any warranty in Canada anyways. You brought it! Gifts and trinkets? well if you spend over a grand  on that then you have too many friends but you eont have any problems. All they care about is smokes and booze. So not over a carton and no more than a litre I think but if you have a 40  in one bottles or some gift bottles again they wont care Ive done it loads of times. Have fun Hong Kong kicks ***!
