I'm helping a friend locate his birthfamily, so I thought I'd try putting this out there. He was born with the last name Cook in December 1962 in Nevada, Iowa. Any help would be appreciated!

  1. I went to zabasearch.com, and he can look up the information that he knows and start looking around.  Other than that, I don't know who he is, sorry.

  2. If he hasn't already done so, register with online groups such as

    registry.adoption.com

    g's adoption search

and any IA specific groups you can find.

Polk city directories may help you locate Cook families from Nevada IA in 1962.  These can usually be found at the local library.  If you cannot go there directly and need to contact someone at the library to help you, do not mention that it is for adoption search, only tell them that you are trying to trace a family member (genealogy).

Try searching online for genealogy sites for this town and look for the family name Cook.  If you know birth-mother's approx age, look in yearbooks at the library as well.  Also try to locate obituaries for the name Cook in the same town and read for female names, could give you a current married name and the town the person lived in at the time of the obit.

It appears to be a very small town but unfortunately a fairly common name.

    Good luck!

  3. Good Luck on your search, and please make sure that your friend is ready for a reunion.

This is what helped me find my family in 3 days.  I was looking in the wrong spots and then, I had it figured out.  I knew some information about my family, that my grandfather died one year prior to my death.  I also had some non-identifying information about them.  I also had an in, I knew my birth name and last name.  So I looked at the obits for the year that my grandfather died, and then I looked in a censous book, and the info I had, was a match.  I then searched found the surviving ones, wrote a letter, and I have had formed some relations with my family.

Good luck and I hope everything goes well.
