Question:

Reupholster office chair?

by  |  earlier

I have a chair similar to this one: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml04/04218.jpg

The problem is that the seat cover is now splitting/tearing and needs to be replaced. I know I can remove the seat (and back-rest) from the wheel base. Do I also need to remove the arm rests and how would I do that?

How would I put on (reupholster) new material to the chair? Except for the seat, the chair is otherwise in "good shape".

Any suggestions, tips or ideas?

  1. I suppose that this must be a very comfortable chair if you want to have it reupholstered , if you are confident to do this yourself , you need to remove the side arms in order to give you free access to fold the replacement fabric or leather. you need to cut a piece long and wide enough to fold under and you will need a stapler to hold the fabric/leather  in place, then you need hot glue to apply the finishing touches.  To be franc with you , you might be able to pull this off ,but you will not be able to tailor the chair to the design that it has, so if you are happy to have a plain looking chair then by all mean do this yourself, otherwise take it to a professional to have it recovered.

  3. All depending where you live, to re-upholster the chair will cost you anywhere between $38-$95 a yard not including the cost of fabric you will need. You might just want to consider getting a new one. You can get them on sale.

  4. Those chairs really aren't designed to be reupholstered... I'm sure you've figured that out by now...

In order to make the job look professional, you will pretty much need to dismantle the whole chair from the seat up. That means you will need to take off the armrests, the backing on the backrest, and the bottom of the seat. Essentually, you need to keep removing plastic pieces until you have the parts of the backrest and seat cushion exposed where the extra (existing) upholstery attaches to something solid.

Chances are good that you will destroy a few small plastic locks in the process, rendering the chair utterly useless.

If I were you, I wouldn't take on that kind of project with a chair thats designed to become landfill fodder when it goes bad. However, I wouldn't throw it away just yet if the chair is still in good working order.

I have a similar chair to the one in the photo. The armrests on mine are not designed to come off. They are held in place by plastic rivets connected to the base of the seat. From what you've described of the damage to your chair, I would do this:

    - Use some good old fashioned duct tape to fix the tears in the seat. If you can find some, you might want to try black 100 mile-an-hour tape instead if the splits are visible from the side view of the chair.

    - Make a pillow out of upholstry foam and the fabric of your choice to fit snugly over the seat. (1/4" would be just fine for this)

-Attach the pillow to the seat with hook-and-loop tape.

It won't look "professional" unless you're good with a sewing machine, but it will solve your problem quickly, while possibly even making the chair more comfortable. If you aren't handy with a needle, you might try to find a premade  pillow at your local superstore. The nice thing is that if you don't like it, you can always try to dismantle the chair later, or maybe sport for a chair massager (which will also cover the seat of your chair quite nicely...)

    Good luck.

  5. if you dont have a problem with covering up  the leather.

    buy some car seat covers.

put some hot glue along the seat and back before you put the covers on and it should stay on nicely.

  7. I have that chair!!!

It is not easy to recover and I have sewn for many many years.

I would suggest you make or buy a seat cushion and set it on top of your seat.

And just buy a new chair later down the road.

Walmart has kitchen seat cushions and one fit my chair perfect.
