Can anyone tell me what's involved with learning how to reupholster furniture? Is it something I could learn in a year or less?

I am trying to get any information or personal experiences here.

Thanks much!

  1. How fast do you learn?  Can't answer.  You will be sewing quite a lot, so, if you already know how that's a plus.

Upholstery is not complicated, and the procedures are pretty much the same for each type of item.

The hard skill is re-upholstery.  Could involve reconstructing the item, re-springing, etc.  Good re-upholsters can tell at a glance if the piece is even worth re-upholstering.

Check your local community college, Cooperative Extension or fabric stores for classes.

  2. Yes, it's possible to learn upholstery in a year.  You'll need very strong hands, because you'll be doing a lot of pulling on fabric in order to get it stretched tightly enough that it doesn't end up looking baggy.  Learning basic techniques isn't all that complicated, but learning all of the little tricks of how to make the job easier takes years.
