Minnesota Timberwolves head coach did not want the former lottery pick to be a part of the teams’ future....
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been working their way towards building a promising team for the future and the endeavour saw them bring in some of the top free agents this summer. They have Kevin Love at the fore front, holding
the key to the future, and the Wolves have surrounded the power forward with both American and international flavour.
Among those internationals is Spaniard Ricky Rubio who along with Love has the ability to carry the Wolves on his shoulders. Andrei Kirilenko, Brandon Roy and Alexey Shved also joined the team in the off season.
However, in order to establish a stronger core, some big time changes needed to be made. And that did not come without parting with several big time names. One the major changes made over the summer was the exit of Michael Beasley,
who consistently failed to live up to his talent.
Darko Milicic was yet another example of a player who failed to live up to his promise. Like Beasley, he was the second draft pick, and that too in perhaps the most talented class of last decade. He got picked ahead of the likes
of Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in the 2003 draft. Milicic was amnestied by the Wolves this off season.
These changes were necessary to build a better team and David Kahn has done a good job. According to owner Glen Taylor though, as per the Twin City Business Magazine, Kahn has been following a system in which the input of head
coach Rick Adelman is paramount. Apparently, the exit of Milicic was suggested by Adelman;
“Most of the moves David is making are heavily influenced by what Rick has asked of us. But when it comes to finances, David will tell Rick no,” Taylor said. “At the end of the year, Rick gives me a report of what he thinks of
each player. He tells me it’s the same one he gave David and that David knows he is giving it to me. Then he goes through the list. He says, ‘This is the first one I want gone’—that was [underachieving veteran centre] Darko [Milicic]. ‘This is the second one
I want gone. This is what I think of this player.’"
