  1. The first estate was the clergy, the second was the nobility and the third was the common people. The third estate disliked having to pay land taxes while the other two estates did not. The estates generals were the heads of the estates and were ordered to convene by the king to come up with a plan to fix the economy. The tennis court oath was an oath made by several of the leaders of the estates (mostly the third) to create a constitution. The declaration of the rights of man basically defined the rights of all the estates as equal. The fall of the Bastille occured on July 14 and was when a mob of Parisians attacked a prison in search of weapons, today its France's national holiday. The national assembly were the same people who had signed the tennis court oath and was a transitional body between the estates and the national constituent assembly. The constitution of 1791 was France's first written constitution and made France a constitutional monarchy. The committee of public safety was the executive form of government during the reign of terror and was headed by Robespierre. The directory was the executive power that succeeded the convention in 1795. Napoleon overthrew the directory in coup and created the consulate.
