Has anyone ever produced a fully automatic revolver? I know they

have made self-cocking revolvers like the Webley-Fosbery of 1900, but I Was wondering if there was ever a full auto revolver. Would it be hard to make one buy adding a sear to a Web./Fos.?

And if they have not made one, they should, or I will.

  1. rofl, automatic revolver... while pretty awesome, in a Hollywood way, I think it'd be pretty pointless, don't you? I mean why go through all the work of making a double-action revolver fully-automatic, when there are tons of single-action pistols converted to or manufactured in full-auto already?

Still, I'd love to see one.

  2. The  modern Mateba and vintage  Webster Fosbury are as close as you are going to get

As has been mentioned a six shot fully auto revolver would be a waste of good engineering

Perhaps if you modified one of the ancient 20 round pin fire revolvers from the 1800's

But then it would take longer to reload than it would take to shoot and reload a conventional semi auto revolver

  3. The revolver was probably the first, most feasible handgun 'repeater' design to make the scene beating the early multiple barrel jobs in all practicality.  None of the Deringer or pepperbox pistols have worked nearly as well as the tried-n-true wheel-gun.  Many aficionados still consider the Colt SAA the finest handgun ever made:  Manually c**k the hammer, pull the trigger and your revolver goes bang for each cylinder that your revolver has.  The revolver concept works, period, whether it is a single or double-action revolver.  So why mess with perfection?  Unless someone can come up with a miniature Gatling gun that can be held and fired with one hand I can't visualize an 'automatic revolver.'   And I should point out that the Gatling gun has revolving multiple barrels and is magazine fed, so technically  it is NOT a real revolver.

I'm not familiar with the Webley-Fosbery you described but it sounds like a headache to maintain in good working order.  Did it fire automatically or merely self-c**k?  I suspect it just rotated the cylinder to the next availabe position and c**k-ed the hammer requiring a second pull of the trigger for the next shot, etc.  If so it was not automatic but semi-auto like the modern auto-loading pistols of today.

As far as automatic revolvers I think that the best that we can practically hope for in a wheel-gun is a smooth, modern double-action revolver.  I like the Colt Python myself.  In a revolver a smooth double-action is all you need.

  4. there have been a few "machine pistols" especially the Czech "skorpion"(their spelling). it was light weight and came with a removable skeleton stock,it shot up to 30 rounds depending on magazine size.

on a revolver, the largest capacity for a cylinder i'm aware of is a .22 caliber Harrington-Richardson double action which holds 11 rounds. like the other dude said how practical would that be if you emptied your piece in a second or so and either had to change cylinders or worse, had to reload.

one other important factor would be muzzle rise- how many rounds would hit their mark? you'd be lucky to make 1 count.

if you want to see how fast a single action revolver can be fired in the hands of someone who knows what their doing check out Bob Munden. it looks and sounds like he's firing an automatic- it's amazing!

  5. no, do you not realize how impractical it would be to have a fully automatic weapon that only shoots 6 shots?

  6. Why, in the name of God, do you need an automatic revolver? Especially as this was posted in a hunting forum. It begs belief..

  7. I don't think those ones that Mouse had in The Matrix were real.

  8. A hand held/fired revolver automatic: No

But your not far off from something that revolves and is automatic. General Electric Mini Gun, M-134, 7.62 NATO Gatling based machine gun.Electrically driven rotary breech. Usually helicopter mounted. In U.S. service since 1963. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minigun

There is also the next generation the G.E. XM-214 Mini Gun
