Question:

Reward for A's on report card?

I have given my children rewards, such as ten dollars for each A that they get to spend on at the school book fair on new books. What should I do when one of my children gets an A but also an F because she did not turn in some important assignments? Should I still reward her for getting the A?

  1. My parents gave us $10 for every A, $5 for every B and then we had to pay back $5 for every C, $10 for every D and $20 for every F. So the rewards were really for only good grades. It might be too late for this time but put it in writing and have each of you sign the deal at the beginning of each semester so everyone knows what to expect. Good luck to you.

  2. Give her $10 for the A and then take it back for the F

  3. What my dad does is for every A we get a dollar. If we get all A's then we get $10. If we get a F we owe him a dollar!

  4. What we do is a point system. Their weekly work is sent home on Tuesdays , so for every A they get one point. They also get points for inititaive, getting chores done on time etc. Anyway, after a month to a month and a half (depending on our work schedule) we take them to Chuck E Cheese's and they get a token for every point. It may not sound like they'll get many tokens, but last Saturday they ended up with about 50 tokens! Plus, Chuck E Cheese gives them free tokens for a good report card, so they did pretty well.

I find this system works better than giving them cash because at their age (10 and 8) they don't fully appreciate the value or importance of money. They have an idea, but it doesn't mean as much as the tokens. That they equate as more A's=more fun.

    Hope this helped :)

  5. if it's 10 dollars per A they get, 10 dollars per A.

if you give them 10 dollars beacuse of A's make 5 dollars half the money because of F

  6. Positive Reinforcement is the best type of punishment.

Children respond much better to it.  And in most counseling settings that is all they use.  This means keep giving her money for her good grades.  That is positive reinforcement.  Don't give her too much attention for the F.  Maybe just briefly mention that you are disappointed.  If she wants money later to buy something calmly mention if she had her extra money from not getting that F she would be able to get it and then leave it at that.

Also you could decide to give 10 for A, 5 for B, 2 for C and that would emphasize Nothing for F.

The thing is you still want her to get an A in whatever subject that was.  So do not punish her for the F by taking away the A money or she may get two Fs next time.

  7. I don't think you should reward her because her job is to get decent grades in all of her classes. She could have atleast gotten a C because atleast you know that she made an effort, but to just get an F because you're too lazy to do the assignment, no that doesn't deserve a reward. Just know that if you do decide to reward her, your sending her the message that do mediocre work is deserving of rewards.

  8. F is un-acceptable. You must teach her that school is important and being bad is wrong ! You may do some home stuff with her . If she says , "I'm bored " ,encourage her to keep trying . As for that money I bet you know the answer .

    No !

  9. I would give the reward for the A (as promised) but I would punish for the F (because she was not responsible enough to turn in the important assignments she is not responsible enough to go out with friends for awhile).

  10. you should take at least 5 dollars for every F. that way they will try harder. or you could average everything out and have a dollar amount for each grade. For example, 0 for F, 5 for D, 10 for C, 20 for B and 30 for A. Something like that.

  11. I don't believe in bribing children.  When they get into college and are expected to keep up their grades who is going to be bribing them then?

  12. Yes, that was the agreement and your history.  However, I'd check on 'why' she didn't take an interest in the class with the 'F'.  I think its somewhat unusual to have such a wide spread of grades (A to F).  Why is the motivation lacking in the 'F' class?

  13. I like this reward system because even though they should be trying to get good grades just because, they do it know because they know you will reward them so they feel like all their hard work is paying off, so this way as bad as it sounds you know they will be trying to get good gorades for money...lol but good idea!! Kudos to you Im going to do that with my kids when they go to school. Yea I agree with the other person here give him the 10 for the A and take it back for getting an F, because F are not acceptable!! Good luck

  14. You should give them $20.00 a reportcard!!!

  15. No because then she is still getting a  reward for the F. It doesn't amtter if you are trying to reward her for the As. She will still get Fs because she still gets the reward. Explain to her that when she doesn't get anymore Fs she can get ehr reward but not until then.

  16. Have her owe you a few bucks for the F.  It will be viewed as mean of course.  Who ever heard of a child owing a parent money?  However, since most kids recognize the value of a dollar more than we give them credit for, negative numbers can make an impact.  It also teaches a lesson in responsibility and priorities.

In my own personal case, I failed a college class in my Freshman year.  I needed to reimburse my grandmother, who helped pay for tuition, PLUS, I had to pay for the course out of my own pocket the next semester.  It definately taught me a lesson about responsibility a thousand dollars too late!  But, starting a system of "You owe me" earlier on might send the message that an F is unacceptable.

Good luck-let us know what you did.

  17. Wow. Your kids are even lucky to get rewarded. When i brought my mother a report card full of A's, all i got was a knod. I mean school is not easy. I think you should reward her a certain amount on each A they get seperatly. I think that's fair.
