Question:

Rewiring needed for new stereo system?

I just bought a new Sony stereo for my 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer ralliart. After working on the install for a while, the guys said that they would need to rewire my speakers. They said it had something to do with the wiring of the infinity system that came factory. Anyway, they charged me another $150 for the extra part and labour. Does anyone know anything about this? Are they just ripping me off, or is this wiring needed for such new cars? The subwoofer in the trunk doesn't seem as loud either... any info would be appreciated.

  1. The Infinity systems have a built in amp. It does indeed need to be rewired.

Basically they had to bypass all of the factory amplifier. On some cars, you can do this with an adapter. I don't think that you can use one on the mitsus though. They probably had to run new wiring to each speaker.

Just be happy it wasn't a Nissan Bose system. Those have a separate amp connected to each speaker.
